June 12, 2010 Cubulero, Alianza, Valle Cornmeal Giveaway After Flooding

The flood waters raged through Cubulero, Alianza knocking down houses, fences, washing away cows, people, cmtaries, etc.  You can see here that the water covered the upper fence line.

On the left you see what looks like a really wide ladder.  That is part of the roof of this house.  The adobe washed away and the roof collapsed, the tiles slid down and this is how the house looks a week later.

This man is moving a microwave...  we gave him a sack of corn meal.
The microwave looks flooded and dead to me.

See how far up the fence line the dirt and leaves are?

Everything outside trying to dry it out.

The water rushed through here with such force, it washed the adobe out from between the wood.
Now they have a see through house.  We also gave them some cornmeal.

The roof stayed on but the walls became see through.

This is a path which goes down to the river.  As the water receded, it took trash with it.

Chepe, Jose Benavides, giving away cornmeal.

These people were on lower ground and their adobe was washed away clear up to their ceiling.

Repairing the house, first the rocks go in and then it is covered with mud.

Not sure I would want to sleep on this after it flooded, but some people have no choice.

Jose Benavides giving away more cornmeal.  Thank you to Ernie and Robin Breaux for the donation where we could help others.

This entire house crumbled.

All the local ladies showed up for some cornmeal.  Today we gave away 2,000 pounds in the flood area.

August 27 Cubulero Wheelchair Giveaway 4 Lives Changed

In spite of the fact that this morning's eye team in Agua Fria was a FLOP, the Lord made lemonade out of a lemon of a situation. When people didn't arrive for the eye brigade, we made a few quick calls and moved on down the road to give away wheelchairs. Our local contact Tinito was able to rally several people who needed wheelchairs so we gave them away on the main corner in a curil stand in Cubulero.

What is a curil? Well it is a shell with an animal inside that the locals eat raw with vinegar. Ugh..... Black oooshy, gooshy blood everywhere and they just suck them down like they are a delicacy. What is a curil stand? It is an outdoor stand that sells these nasty things.

Taking her chance, she moved up from behind and positioned herself to jump into her chair.

When Jose realized that she was headed for her new chair, he asked if she wanted help. "No!" she responded, so Jose got out of the way.

On her way! Moving at the speed of light!

She moved fast with her "hand sandles" and in a flash she was halfway into her chair.

She could hardly wait to get into her new chair. She didn't want any help... so she got in all by herself.... God bless her!

Almost in!

The SMILE tells the entire story. I don't even need words! Thank you Lord for calling me to help people. It is such a blessing. Thank you Jack Deloss Taylor Trust and Dr. Catherine Taylor Foster for making this day possible. Than you Free Wheelchair Mission!

Everyone patiently waits as the men put together the wheelchairs.

Jose and a guy who was walking down the street put together wheelchairs while people arrived.

This is the beautiful group who received wheelchairs today. Tinito and Jose standing at the back.

This man couldn't contain his smiles.

This lady received her chair and was soooooo happy! It was the first time she had been out of the house in years. She put on her best clothes and arrived. She talked to people as they passed by and was so excited. She left thrilled. We just heard that she died tonight only a few hours after receiving the wheelchair. The family re-donated the chair in order to help someone else.

June 16 2009 Cubulero Alianza Eye Brigade

It was a wonderful but very HOT day in Cubulero, a small village known mostly for curiles. Curiles are these ugly little clam things that they eat raw with only vinegar poured over them. Now I could understand the excitement if it was a town known for Chocolate Truffles or Cherry Cheesecake, but these ugly things I can’t get past the smell or the view to even give them a try. UGH!!!

Victor Montoya performs all the eye exams.

I love taking photos of old folks with all their character and wrinkles. Today was a wonderful day full of those kinds of patients. Today we saw 142 people and of the 142 there were 35 over the age of 70. And there was one 93 year old.

February 15, 2008 El Cubulero, Alianza, Honduras

Today we were in El Cubulero, Alianza a small town in the Department of Valle in Honduras

We saw 140 patients and found 14 that need cataract surgery and 6 that need ptygerium surgeries.

Everyone is tired, three days in this heat is hard. But we are all happy! Many lives will be changed as a result of the eyeglasses and the surgeries.
