October 9, 2010 Wheelchair Giveaway In Guimaca

I know, I know... What does a helicopter have to do with a wheelchair giveaway?

There is an interesting story behind this helicopter.

Because inside this helicopter was none other than the President of Congress, Juan Orlando Hernandez, arriving to help give away wheelchairs.  In fact several "important people" showed up at this event.  Thanks to my friend and co-laborer, Renan Inestroza from "Repuesto Por Andar", a non-profit group with whom I co-labor in order to help people with wheelchair needs.

When the helicopter finally landed in the "futbal" / soccer field, there were many people waiting to see what was going to happen and who was going to get out of the helicopter.

But this is the real celebrity... Isn't he cute?

And this is another celebrity.

Juan Orlando shaking hands with one of the wheelchair recipients.

Another recipient.

And look at this precious little one...

And another...

She slept through the whole program...

And another...

And another cute one...

And after the program, the military showed up to give away rations to the poor...

A straight and non-shoving line...  Look how neat and orderly.  The people who needed help were preselected according to need...

What a great day except for all the potholes on the way to Guiamaca... Some of us drove and didn't ride in a helicopter...  I think I might ask the Lord to give me a helicopter...  It seems so much easier to fly in and land in the "futbal" field.  But meanwhile I drive a car which needs gas and speaking of that, now seems like an appropriate time to give thanks to Jack DeLoss Taylor trust for the gasoline which they so thoughtfully provide for.  With out them and other supporters, I could not do the job I do.  Free Wheelchair Mission donates the wheelchairs and friends put them together out of the boxes.  This year and last we will have given away 1,700 wheelchairs...  Lots of work and lots of fun!
