July 30, 2010 Today I Went To The Beach With My Friends

My friends Linda Bell, Bobbie Warner, Jose Benavides and I decided we wanted to go to the beach for the day... So we did...

We stayed and watched the tide go all the way down...

This is a Jicaro tree which has a fruit attached to the truck.
They take the seeds out and dry them and make Horchata...
Next time you are in a Mexican restaurant ask for Horchata... It is really a nice refreshing drink.

These are the shrimp farms close to where we went to the beach.
Reminds me of Stuttgart, Arkansas rice fields...

These are called "garzas" in Spanish.  I have no idea what they are in English...
But it seems like I should know...

The fishing boats resting until tide goes up again...

A friendly pelican and this is not with a zoom lens.

The sky was gorgeous!!!

This little raccoon was sleeping in a tree beside the beach.
We got right up under him to take the photo...
He didn't move...

What a wonderful day!
Thank you Lord for relaxing days.

Pelicans and People

Pelican taking flight!

Here you can see two children in the water and the five pelicans fishing close to them.
Neither is afraid of, nor interested in the other.
Amazing and beautiful!

I saw something strange floating in the water.

Turns out it was a turtle. Yes, we returned him to the water and he floated away.

This local dog is a little upset because the pelican is too close to his owner's boat. So the goes dog paddling after him.

The outcome was obvious to all but the dog.

The pelican escaped with lots of room to spare.

If you look carefully between the boats you can see the stingrays on the ground.

The men are skinning them to sell the meat.

Practicing With My Camera

Sadly death is a part of life. Some of these photos show death. Some show life. Some show life cycles. I hope you enjoy them. This is my precious Honduras!

I am having a wonderful time with my camera, except for the fact that the screen is broken. Someday I will get to the USA and get a new one, with a screen that works and a titanium case, where everything in my purse doesn't break the screen.

February 7 2010 Cleaning The Beach With The Boy Scouts

I am a firm believer in the Bible and the Bible says in Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

If the Lord’s throne is magnificent and we know that it is… then we know that the Lord like cleanliness… knowing this, shouldn’t we keep the earth as clean as possible? Since the earth is the Lord’s and it is on loan to us, shouldn’t we take care of it?

The ride out to the beach... Julio the scoutmaster on the left.

There is nothing that peeves me more than to be driving down the street and see people throwing stuff out of bus windows and car windows. If it is a banana peel or an apple core, it is one thing, but plastic bottles, plastic bags, glass bottles, aluminum cans… old tires on the side of the road… it goes on and on in Honduras. The roads are full of clutter and people’s yards are full of trash. UGH!!!

The ride back in with a tired bunch of kids...

Jose recently purchased a piece of property on the beach. It has a beautiful view, but he has a bunch of pigs for neighbors. So I called the Scout Troop #14 Kenya group from Choluteca and enlisted their help. These are the same scouts who have helped SMART Medical Teams with their medical brigades for years and years. These are also the same kids which have put together hundreds of wheelchairs to give to the needy.

As always they were more than happy to help with the beach clean-up project and especially if it meant that they could swim after the job was done. So we all met at 7 AM on Sunday morning and off we went to the beach.

Trash was burned and plastic bottles were bagged to be recycled. We had a great time and I believe God smiled down on us.

February 4 2010 Trying My Hand At Taking Bird Photos

I am really enjoying taking photographs. Today I decided that I want a fancy camera. Take note… A camera which will take quick photos one after another and a long range lens are now on my Wish List. Does anyone have any suggestions of a small pocket camera which meets these qualifications? Or is there such an animal?
